The Road to a Thousand Theaters

How Creator Camp took an internet-native film from a sold-out tour to theaters across the US and EU.

The campaign

An internet-native film, and the community that wanted to see it on the big screen.

Creator Camp is a media incubator for digital creators. It helps online storytellers develop and own high-impact IP and take their work from content to cinema, beyond the algorithm. Two Sleepy People was an internet-native film built by a community that came up online, and The Road to 1000 Theaters was the campaign built to find out whether that audience would show up in a physical theater, with the goal of booking 1,000 of them.

Before going wide, Creator Camp ran a national tour as a test, with premiere events in cities including Austin, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. Many sold out, and the film released nationwide on November 14, playing across the US and into the EU.

The films

Leading up to the release of Two Sleepy People, we made a YouTube series that followed the push to 1,000 theaters. Across 14 episodes, the mini-doc series covered the people, decisions, and creative process behind the campaign.

The role

Keoni found Creator Camp through social media, where he was posting content from his travels. His first project with the team was an event in Switzerland with Switzerland Tourism, which led to a full-time role as lead video editor. Over about a year and a half he became Head of Video and made the YouTube series and the 14-episode mini-doc series following the push to 1,000 theaters.

The work

Beyond the series, Keoni edited for social platforms, cut animation and motion graphics, and helped with design, alongside a weekly pipeline of YouTube videos and partner campaigns. Over six months, the three-person marketing team grew Creator Camp’s Instagram from 60k to 189k.

Behind the work

He also documented the daily build-up to Camp Film Fest, the Base Camp events, and the tour itself. He had a hand in nearly everything creative at Creator Camp.

The road

The Road to 1000 Theaters started as one ambitious idea, and a team willing to document all of it.
